Baseball In The Hamptons

November 7th, 2008 12:19pm
Hampton Whalers

America’s pastime — baseball, not bitter bi-partisan politics — is spreading throughout the Hamptons (hopefully that other “pastime” won’t). With the success of the Hampton Whalers debut season in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League this past year, some East End towns have come together and decided to host their own league next summer.

Joining in on the action will be Sag Harbor, Southampton, Southold and Riverhead, as they have all agreed to host teams for the summer. Westhampton Beach is still mulling over the X’s and O’s of joining. We say join! The more the merrier.

The teams will consist of collegiate players from across the country who will live with host families and work in the community, between innings that is. It’s a win-win. Last season, the Whalers provided free baseball clinics for local children, while Major League scouts came to town to assess their talent for the Major League draft.

Football & Futbol

Westhampton Beach Football

The fat lady was nowhere to be found, so the Westhampton Beach Hurricanes football team kept on playing — and winning. The Hurricanes started slow but finished their season off strong with a convincing 31-0 victory over Comsewogue. Tailback Mike Aydinian led the way with three touchdowns as the Hurricanes earned the last spot in the Division III playoffs. They’ll face the Sayville Golden Flashes — who finished the season 7-1 — in the first round this Saturday. The way this season has gone, anything can happen. Golden Flashes: Consider yourselves warned.

In other “futbol” news, the Southampton Mariners boys soccer team lost 2-0 in the Class B title game at the hands -—or shall we say feet — of the defending Long Island champion Mattituck Tuckers. Well played to the Mariners, and good luck to the Tuckers!
